User Experience

The first time you run AOMEI Backupper Free, you’re prompted to take action against the now infamous WannaCry ransomware.

If your system hasn’t yet been compromised you’re advised to use AOMEI’s tools to create a new system, file, disk, or partition backup so you can recover your files without paying for the privilege.

If your PC has been infected, you are promoted to create an image of your system, disk or partition to avoid further data loss before the virus is removed. This is reassuring guidance – particularly if you’ve never used backup software before.

Backupper Standard’s performance was the yin and yang in our roundup. It was the fastest backing up disks and partitions, but easily the slowest backing up sets of files. On the other hand, CPU usage was light, and speed isn’t of much consequence for a task running in the background.

Aomei Backupper Standard has a fairly heavy footprint, spawning three background processes: the core, shadow copy, and a scheduler. We often wonder why companies ignore a perfectly good scheduling app (Window’s own) that’s already running in the background. To be fair, Acronis True Image spawns six background processes.

AOMEI Backupper Standard can back up your entire Windows system as an ISO file, or disc image, which you can burn to a bootable DVD or CD using a free app like ImgBurn.

If you find that your system becomes unstable, or you can’t load Windows, just boot from this disc to restore your system to a stable state. It’s more reliable than Windows’ own System Restore option, and you won’t need to reinstall your operating system, settings and programs from scratch.

You can also use AOMEI Backupper to back up files. There are three types of file backup available: Full, which makes a complete copy of all the selected data. Differential, which makes a copy of all the data that has been added or changed since the last full backup.

Incremental, which makes a copy of the data that has been added or changed since the last backup – whether that backup was full or incremental.

To restore your files, you’ll need the last full backup, as well as either the most recent differential backup, or all incremental backups. With AOMEI Backupper Standard, you can schedule regular backups of your most commonly used files or directories, and save the backups in a location of your choice.

Then, if disaster strikes, you can use the software to restore them all with just a couple of clicks. AOMEI Backupper can test the integrity of your backups once they’re complete, and can shut down your PC automatically once it’s finished.

In total, Although AOMEI Backupper is pretty advanced, I like how simple it is to use. I didn’t run across any settings or features that left me wondering what it did or how to use it.

I also like that you can set up the system partition to be backed up on a schedule. Couple this with the Volume Shadow Copy support and you can keep your Windows partition backed up without any issues.

One minor downside to AOMEI Backupper is the lack of encryption options. In the general settings, you can choose to encrypt the backup set, but that’s the only options. There aren’t multiple encryption options, which is important if you have data you want more protected than other data.

Encryption can make performance slower, which is why you may want a lower encryption on sentimental files and higher encryption on more private files like financial records. But as mentioned, this is a minor issue that most novice users aren’t generally concerned with.

That’s not all! When restoring files from a backup, the window you’re browsing in can’t be resized, which makes for a rather small area to use for selecting what to restore.

Also, the original folder structure remains intact when restoring to a custom folder. There aren’t any settings or options available to change this, which is a bit unfortunate.

I also don’t like that AOMEI Backupper is unable to pause a backup. You’re able to cancel a backup in progress but having the option to simply pause it would be nice.

AOMEI Backupper is an ideal data backup solution for a novice user. The app is designed around the backup and restore processes, with few steps and little room for user error.

It also performed above average in all of our tests and had the best compression rate. This backup app is a great option that’s easy to use and performs well.

Product Pricing

Despite being free, there’s little missing from Backupper Standard’s feature set, which includes: imaging, file backup, disk cloning, and plain file syncing. There are a plethora of scheduling options as well as syncing, including the aforementioned real-time synchronization.

Syncing isn’t true back up—it’s keeping a mirror of your important data in another location—a great hedge against losing recent work.

Backupper Standard will image entire drives or partitions, verify them, and mount them so you can grab a few files from one. The pay version adds imaging of dynamic volumes, and merging images—tasks few end users will ever need to perform.

The system cloning offered in the $40 paid version ($50 if you opt for lifetime free upgrades) could be very useful, as could the network boot function. But that’s speaking from an IT perspective.

Aomei provides both Linux and Windows PE boot images, which can be burned to CD or installed on USB drives. You can check all the information here about this free backup software!

AOMEI Backupper Review Conclusion

After testing both AOMEI Backupper Standard and Pro version, I found it is one best Data backup software. It has many features that you will not see in others backup tools. I will highly recommend this because you can use the free version without any restriction.
